Two Lines, One Date — What CIA Whistleblower Erdman Adds to the Feb-1 Timeline

May 13, 2026, public hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Rand Paul: James Erdman III, active CIA operations officer with approximately 20 years of service, testified under subpoena.

The CIA responded the same day with a statement:

“The Committee acted in bad faith by subpoenaing an Agency officer for testimony today without notifying CIA. […] Nothing more than dishonest political theater masquerading as a congressional hearing.”

And in the same statement:

“As the CIA has already assessed, COVID-19 most likely originated from a lab leak.”

That is the internal contradiction in the CIA’s communication: the hearing is without substance, and the witness confirms the CIA’s core finding. Both simultaneously.

James Erdman III

Erdman led the COVID origins investigation of the Director’s Initiatives Group at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) between March 2025 and April 2026. He had already testified in a closed session before the public hearing — the CIA confirmed this. The public subpoena was issued without advance notice to the CIA.

No official word-for-word transcript exists (as of May 14, 2026). The C-SPAN video of the hearing is archived. The following Erdman quotes are supported by at least two independent news reports.

The Scientific Line — Known Primary Source Record
#

What was documented before Erdman’s testimony:

On the evening of January 31, 2020, Kristian Andersen wrote to Anthony Fauci: the virus’s genomic features were “inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory” — potentially indicating engineering.

On February 1, 2020, the conference call took place, convened by Jeremy Farrar (Wellcome Trust). Participants: Collins, Fauci, Andersen, Rambaut, Holmes, Garry, Koopmans, Fouchier, Drosten, Vallance, Ferguson, Pöhlmann. Holmes internally estimated approximately 80 percent probability for laboratory origin. Baric was not invited — due to his connections to the WIV.

On March 17, 2020, Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2 appeared in Nature Medicine: “Our analyses clearly show that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus.”

Andersen was the one who had written shortly before, internally, that the genomic features were “inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory.”

This line — from the conference call to Proximal Origin — is documented in the FOIA-released emails.

The Intelligence Line — Erdman’s Testimony
#

Erdman names February 3, 2020 as the first date on which Fauci directly engaged with internal Intelligence Community deliberations on COVID origins. Two days after the conference call.

His core statement:

“Dr. Fauci’s role in the cover-up was intentional.”

“Dr. Fauci influenced the analytical process and findings by leveraging his position to ensure that the IC consulted with a conflicted list of curated subject-matter experts.”

The curated expert list Fauci provided to the IC, per Erdman’s account, overlaps strikingly with the authors of Proximal Origin. At least one author of the paper had reversed their internal assessment from February 1, 2020 — lab leak likely — in the published version, and subsequently received a $9 million grant from Fauci’s own agency (NIAID/NIH).

The August 2021 Pivot
#

On August 12, 2021, the CIA internally considered issuing an official lab leak finding. Five days later, on August 17, that position had been withdrawn — without documented explanation.

Erdman:

“CIA managers retaliated against them for their refusal to agree with management’s middle-of-the-night anonymous rewrite.”

In the CIA’s internal 2022 review: 8 of 10 analysts initially leaned toward lab leak. After management pressure: 6 of 7 technical experts maintained that assessment. Management rewrote the conclusion to:

“We may never precisely know the origins of SARS-CoV-2.”

Congress was not informed.

The Parallel Structure
#

The line runs:

February 1/3, 2020 — Conference call (science) + first Fauci engagement with IC (intelligence)

March 17, 2020 — Proximal Origin (public scientific line)

2021–2023 — CIA analysts internally favor lab leak, never communicated (intelligence line)

August 12→17, 2021 — CIA pivot without explanation

January 27, 2025 — CIA publishes for the first time: lab leak “more likely,” low confidence

Two lines, one origin point. The scientific line is documented in the emails. The intelligence line is Erdman’s testimony — corroborated by multiple consistent reports, but without an official transcript.

What Is Missing
#

The HSGAC word-for-word transcript has not yet been published. Coverage of the hearing comes predominantly from conservative-libertarian US outlets; no Democratic senators were present. The $9 million grant allegation cannot be directly verified without a named author.

Erdman referenced approximately 2,000 classified pages at ODNI that DNI Gabbard is preparing to declassify. No timeline is known.

What Remains
#

On May 13, 2026, the CIA declared the hearing without substance and confirmed the witness’s core finding in a single statement. That is not an accident of phrasing — it is the state of play.

February 3, 2020 is the new date. Two days after February 1 — and the scientific line runs parallel, visible in the emails.

"Complete Nonsense" — The Quote, Its Subject, and What Became of It

On May 12, 2020, Christian Drosten said on the NDR podcast: ‘That is complete nonsense.’ The subject: Luc Montagnier’s claim that HIV sequences had been genetically inserted into SARS-CoV-2. The Focus headline the next day: ‘Drosten refutes lab theory.’ Those are two different statements. One was correct. The other was broader than the quote.

Malinformation: The Category That Made True Facts a Threat

The Virality Project defined an internal category called ‘malinformation’: factually accurate information that could cause vaccine hesitancy. Classified as actionable content: a VAERS PDF, a New York Times article on thrombocytopenia, true reports of AstraZeneca blood clots, a New York school closed after adverse event reports. This is not content moderation. This is the suppression of true information — documented in the project’s own records.

Three Transparency Gaps in the Key PCR Paper

The Corman-Drosten paper of January 2020 is the scientific foundation of global PCR diagnostics. Three transparency problems were identified later — peer review completed in 24 hours, undisclosed commercial conflicts of interest among co-authors, undisclosed editorial board membership of two authors. All three were acknowledged by the journal itself. The paper holds scientifically. Both things are true.
