In 2022, Bill Gates sits in the ABC studio of The View — promoting his book “How to Prevent the Next Pandemic”, published 3 May 2022 by Knopf Doubleday — and delivers a line that comes out with an unmistakable smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth:
“We’ll have to prepare for the next one. That will get attention this time.”
Four years and four months later, on 6 May 2026, the Gates-skeptical X account Liz Churchill reposts the clip. On the same day, South African laboratories confirm Andes hantavirus aboard the MV Hondius — three dead, person-to-person transmission, IHR-activated cross-border outbreak, follow-on case in Zurich. The empirical test is live.
1. The line, in full and in context#
Date: 2022. Location: ABC studio, The View. Occasion: book promotion for “How to Prevent the Next Pandemic” (Knopf Doubleday, 3 May 2022). Format: daytime talk show, casual conversation. Context question: how should the world prepare for the next pandemic, just as COVID-19 is supposedly winding down.
Elsewhere in the same appearance Gates also says:
“And it won’t be the last pandemic. The next one could be far more severe. […] There’s plenty to worry about. […] But overall, I’m an optimist. […] It’s up to the government to think ahead on behalf of the citizens. So a pandemic, there’s a lot that we should be doing — hopefully we’ll get our act together before the next one comes.”
When a host asks whether he predicts the next pandemic “within maybe 25 years”, he answers: “Oh, certainly we’ll have one … in the next 25 years. There’s even some pathogens out there that we’re watching over right now.”
That gives the full picture in four points:
- Diagnostic obligation: “won’t be the last”, “certainly we’ll have one in the next 25 years” — the next pandemic is not if, but when.
- A forecast with a smirk: “That will get attention this time” — this next one will, unlike COVID, get the attention Gates deems necessary.
- Reassignment of responsibility: “it’s up to the government to think ahead on behalf of the citizens” — citizens are recipients in the model, not co-deciders. Preparation happens for them, not with them.
- Standing surveillance: “some pathogens out there that we’re watching over right now” — the watch infrastructure is already running.
The second point — “That will get attention this time” — is the telling one. Gates does not say: “We hope the next one gets more attention” (a wish). He does not say: “The next one could be worse” (a risk estimate — he formulates that separately as “could be far more severe”). He says that will get attention — indicative mood, forecast, smirk. It does not sound like worry. It sounds like a plan.
Point three deserves a second pause. “It’s up to the government to think ahead on behalf of the citizens” — to think for the citizens, not with them. That is exactly the mandate position the NGO/foundation apparatus has been establishing in pandemic architecture over the past two decades: citizens are protected by deciding for them. Whoever says this on a daytime talk show between two commercial breaks is not, by chance, also currently promoting a book about it.
2. The empirical test: first 72 hours of Hondius#
If Gates’s forecast is correct, the next pandemic trigger should impose attention on the population. Hondius is the first real trigger since COVID that meets the institutional attention-conditions:
| Criterion | Hondius finding |
|---|---|
| International ship route | Ushuaia → Antarctica → Cape Verde |
| Multiple deaths | 3 (as of 6 May 2026) |
| Person-to-person documented | Andes virus, peer-reviewed since 1996 |
| Cross-border spread | Swiss follow-on case, IHR activated |
| WHO confirmation | 4 May 2026 |
| Strain laboratory-confirmed | 6 May 2026 (NICD South Africa, HUG Geneva) |
| Drama | Ship denied port entry, TikTok from cabins |
What happens on the attention side — for the public?
- 4 May, public broadcaster: tagesschau explainer clip pivots away from Hondius onto central-European hantaviruses and reassures with “no person-to-person”. False reassurance via strain confusion.
- 5 May: Schmidt-Chanasit (BNITM Hamburg) reposts a passenger TikTok with “probably Andes virus”, Marion Koopmans (Erasmus Rotterdam) dampens via tweet with “just one of many hantaviruses”. The two leading voices of the WHO reference cluster send opposing signals on the same day.
- 6 May, 10:45 a.m.: Schmidt-Chanasit tweets the Andes confirmation with “Very good work, Kudos 👍”. Three dead, IHR activated — communicated as a successful lab routine.
For the public, this story does not get COVID-equivalent attention. tagesschau has kept its prime-time slot for other topics. No special broadcast, no live links to the harbour, no public information that this hantavirus strain is the exception.
Attention goes to — the apparatus. Lab networks, IHR machinery, cluster Twitter accounts. Not the population.
Gates’s forecast was too optimistic — if you read his smirk as expecting public outcry. His forecast was exact — if you read it as expecting institutional activation.
3. The business case behind the line#
Why would Gates expect “this time” to get attention? Because in the intervening years a pandemic value chain has continued to grow, in whose nodes the Gates Foundation is positioned. The data points — all documented in existing Eliza structural analyses — form a vertical integration:
| Phase | Node | Gates involvement | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research | CEPI (founded 2017) | Co-founder, major donor ($300m in 2022) | Gates → CEPI → sa-mRNA → Kostaive |
| Platform | Moderna mRNA hantavirus | Joint Seminar Korea Univ. VIC, 4 July 2024 | Hondius structural analysis |
| Manufacturer | BioNTech | Foundation shareholding since September 2019 | Hondius structural analysis |
| Distribution | GAVI | Co-founder 2000, sustained major donor | Epstein Files: Pandemics as a financial product |
| Norm-setting | WHO | Second-largest individual donor 2018–2022 | Public WHO finance reports |
| Media accompaniment | Der Spiegel | $5.4m in funding, 2018–2024 | Spiegel scandal chronicle |
| Exercise architecture | Polaris I/II, Event 201, Clade X, SPARS, Atlantic Storm | Foundation funding of the host institutions | Event 201, Clade X |
This pipeline is neither hypothetical nor a conspiracy. It is a philanthropic infrastructure built up over decades. It functions — if activated. It is activated if an outbreak crosses the attention threshold. “That will get attention this time” is, in the business model, the trigger point of the value creation.
For someone invested in every node of that chain, lines like this come more easily out of the corner of the mouth.
4. The mandate question#
Gates is a private individual. Not an elected official, not a WHO official, not a health minister, not a head of state. He nonetheless speaks on daytime talk shows, at the UN General Assembly, at TED, at Lowy Institute lectures, at congressional hearings, at WEF panels — as a pandemic authority.
Who put him there?
Answer 1 (official): the generosity of his foundation. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the world’s largest private foundation, distributes billions per year, funds research, vaccination programmes, health systems.
Answer 2 (structural): financial weighting at the nodes. Whoever co-finances the WHO with $750m per cycle, who co-founded GAVI, who has bought into CEPI, BioNTech, Moderna pipeline partners — becomes the industry’s spokesperson by sheer weight. Mandate = money.
Answer 3 (democratic): no one. No public ever authorised Bill Gates to speak about the pandemic future of the world. No election. No referendum. No citizens’ assembly. The public is informed via the institutional cluster — and the cluster is shaped, in part, by foundation finances.
This bypass mechanism — “who consented to this?” — is analysed by the Eliza NGO structural-analysis lens as a recurring pattern. With Gates it is particularly pronounced, because the voice of private reach overlays the voice of public policy on pandemic matters.
The Epstein credibility question belongs inside this mandate question, not next to it. After Epstein’s 2008 conviction, Gates met with him several times between 2011 and 2014 — “abhorrent, evil personified”, as Melinda Gates later worded the divorce reason. Detail in Bill Gates, 10 June 2026: whatever he says — we have the documents.
5. What Hondius says about Gates’s forecast#
If, after 72 hours of Hondius, attention is not with the public — what does that mean for Gates’s “this time” forecast?
Reading A (forecast wrong): Perhaps the population is, after COVID, immune to pandemic mobilisation. “This time” will not get more attention, because the psychological threshold has shifted upward after 2020–2023. The Gates pipeline keeps running anyway, but in silent apparatus mode.
Reading B (forecast correct, but staged): “Attention” in Gates’s sense does not mean spontaneous public shock, but apparatus activation — which we already see at Hondius (IHR activated, Polaris exercises, mRNA pipeline activated). Public attention comes only when the apparatus forces it via WHO emergency declarations, lockdown echoes and mandate debates. Hondius would then be the test trigger, not the end event.
Reading C (forecast correct, different mechanism): Perhaps it takes a more severe pathogen than Andes virus to break the public threshold — for instance a confirmed off-ship person-to-person spread in a major city, or activation of the WHO Pandemic Treaty WHA79. Hondius would then be a curtain-raiser, not the main event.
The reading that best matches Gates’s smirk is B. Attention is not emotional, but structural. It does not come from the population, it comes to the population — via apparatus, pipeline activation, contractual emergency architecture. “This time will get attention” means: this time we will be able to organise the attention.
Anyone who has read the script knows: the “we’ll” in Gates’s sentence is plural and possessive.
6. Why this forecast does not come from the population#
Pandemic forecasts of this kind are not legitimised by any democratic procedure. No one in 2022 said in a referendum: “Please, Bill, tell us what comes next and drive the pipeline so we are prepared.” What we have is a private philanthropist whose forecast prefigures the business model of his investments, and whose institutional reach via foundation money is large enough that his word circulates as fact.
When in this constellation the word “godlike” surfaces, it is not caricature. It is mandate-lessness combined with reach. Gods speak without anyone needing to elect them. They do so because they are gods. Gates speaks without anyone needing to elect him. He does so because his foundation money substitutes for the election.
Hondius is the test in which this mandate-lessness meets a real wave. Schmidt-Chanasit celebrates, Schmiedel reassures, Koopmans dampens, lab Twitter applauds with thumbs-ups. Only one party is missing from this chain: the citizen, to whom the spectacle will be presented once the apparatus phase tips into the public phase.
Exactly when that happens, we don’t know. That it can happen, we know — because Gates said it on a US daytime talk show in 2022, between two laugh lines, with a smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth.
Closing#
Bill Gates in 2022 did not state a probability. He stated an expectation. Four years later, the Hondius wave has arrived, the apparatus is in activation mode, the pipeline is ready, the script is legible.
The next pandemic will probably not get attention “out of nowhere”. The attention will be loaded onto it, in a sequence that fits the business model: first reassurance, then graduated escalation, then WHO emergency, then mandate architecture. We have read this book before. It first went to print in 2020.
What we can do: read Gates’s lines not as weather forecasts but as business plans. Whoever drops a forecast in a private interview without a mandate, with a smirk on the way out, is not predicting — he is announcing. Whoever has the pipeline ready that fits the announcement is not announcing out of helplessness, but out of position.
The only attention that would be dangerous to the pipeline is the population’s — and in particular before the apparatus phase tips into the public phase. Not in shock. In disciplined reading.
We keep reading.
