Earth Day, One Foundation, One Ship, One Tweet: How Obama, the Sick Foundation and Luisa Neubauer Came Together on April 22, 2026

What Additionally Happened on April 22, 2026
#

April 22, 2026 was a dense news day. We already documented it in a separate article: In the morning, the German cabinet adopted the third suspicionless IP-data retention bill with extended intelligence-service access. Defence Minister Pistorius unveiled the Federal Republic’s first formal military strategy (Russia as primary threat, Bundeswehr growth to 460,000 personnel). The EU Council waved through the 20th Russia sanctions package plus a €90 billion Ukraine loan. And Spiegel published its exclusive on the Klöckner Signal phishing story, which rhetorically delivered exactly the threat picture the first three decisions required.

Into the same news window, Barack Obama posted on X:

“The young people in our @ObamaFoundation Leaders program give me hope. One of those leaders, Luisa Neubauer, is working to fight climate change and recently traveled to Antarctica. This Earth Day, I hope you’ll check out her incredible story.”

Attached: a roughly 40-second video.1 It shows the German climate activist in heavy polar gear and life jacket aboard the research sailing vessel Malizia Explorer in Antarctica. She calls the fossil-fuelled climate crisis the “mother of all crises”, warns of weakened climate targets, of climate denial, of war and hunger. She describes Antarctica as a “place of hope”, “almost utopian in today’s world”.

The German wave of coverage was substantial: Berliner Zeitung, t-online, Stuttgarter Nachrichten, Tagesspiegel, Junge Freiheit, Apollo News, Abendzeitung, web.de — within one day across the political spectrum.2 Nobody asked the obvious question about the pipeline.

We do it now.

Two Voyages, One Ship, Two Funders
#

The Malizia Explorer is a 26-metre aluminium research sailing vessel belonging to the professional sailor Boris Herrmann (Vendée Globe, IMOCA class). Owner and operator: Team Malizia / Boris Herrmann Racing (Hamburg). It sails under Monegasque flag.3

What appears in general reporting as “the Antarctica mission” is in reality two separate legs with different funders and finances, stacked on the same ship:

Leg 1 — Science (November 18 to December 7, 2025): Mission Antarctica / Danger Islands. Departure from Ushuaia, Adélie penguin colony survey, return Ushuaia. Without Luisa Neubauer. Crew: Boris Herrmann plus scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and the Thuringian Institute for Sustainability and Climate Protection (ThINK). The mission was drafted by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and financed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) — as a German-American initiative preparing a potential protected area.4 Stated goal: “from science to political action”.

Leg 2 — Communication (January 2026, ca. 4 weeks): The “Globales Klassenzimmer” (Global Classroom) / Mission Antarctica education leg. With Luisa Neubauer. Plus French climate activist Camille Étienne, Brazilian sailor-author Tamara Klink, an AWI scientist (Lea Olivier), as “ambassadors” Eckart von Hirschhausen and Tobias Krell (“Checker Tobi”), plus media co-production with ZDFheute (Carsten Behrendt), GEO (Andreas Wolfers) and National Geographic photographer Esther Horvath. Three live school hours via Zoom January 14-16, 2026, with more than 1,000 registered teachers.

Funder and carrier of Leg 2 is not the BMUV. It is:5

  • Protect the Planet gGmbH (Munich)
  • jointly with the Dorothea-Laura-Janina Sick Environmental Foundation — a state-recognized foundation of the Sick family (sensor industry / Stuttgart, recognition granted by the Upper Bavarian Government in 2022)

This is the clean distinction that no German outlet makes: BMUV tax money bore the scientific mission, a private mid-size industrial family foundation bears the communications leg with celebrity cast. Concrete cost sums are disclosed for neither leg — a four-week Antarctic expedition with this crew size and logistics lies in the six- to seven-figure Euro range.

To note: A mission that presents publicly as “science” has a scientific pre-leg and a PR/education main leg — and the second is the one played out in the global media channels. That was the plan. More than 1,000 schools had registered before the voyage.

The Activist: What Obama Foundation Leaders Is
#

The Obama Foundation Leaders Program was launched in Africa in 2018, expanded to Asia-Pacific in 2019, to Europe in 2020, to the USA in 2023.6 It is a six-month fully virtual program for “emerging leaders” aged 24 to 45 — about 8 to 12 hours per month, organized into regional cohorts (35 people in the Europe cohort 2025-2026), with coaching, workshops and peer-group sessions.

Crucial to the pipeline logic: the program pays no stipend, charges no fees and grants no project funding. From the official FAQ:

“Leaders will not be paid a stipend… incur no fees… Foundation does not provide financial support for participants’ work.”7

The program transfers no money. It transfers prestige, networks and brand capital. Afterwards: lifelong membership in the Obama Leadership Network with more than 1,500 alumni. In soft-power vocabulary this is a classic prestige-conferring rather than resource-transferring program.

Luisa Neubauer was part of the inaugural Europe cohort 2020 — when the program launched in Europe, in its very first year.8 She has been an Obama Foundation alumna since 2020.

She is not the only German alumna. In the same 2020 cohort: Katharina Schulze, Green parliamentary group leader in the Bavarian state parliament, top candidate in 2018 — and incidentally already an Obama campaign volunteer in Michigan in 2008. In the 2022 cohort: Delara Burkhardt (SPD MEP 2019-2024, climate focus) and Fridtjof Detzner (co-founder Jimdo, later Planet-A Ventures). In the 2024 cohort: Benedikt Bösel (regenerative agriculture, Schloss Alt Madlitz). In the 2025-2026 cohort: two more German names (Luise Ammerschuber, Malte Krüger).9

The pattern that emerges: the Obama Foundation recruits people with pre-existing profile in German politics (Greens, SPD), activism, tech business and agricultural innovation. Career acceleration after program participation is not clearly demonstrable in every individual case (Schulze had her rise before) — the lever is visibility by US standards, international distribution access and a lifelong loyalty anchor in the US Democratic establishment network.

Who Funds Obama’s Foundation
#

The Obama Foundation held total assets of USD 1.11 billion in 2024 — a fivefold increase since 2017.10 CEO Valerie Jarrett: USD 740,000 compensation 2024.

Top donors (publicly listed, tier ≥ USD 1M):11

  • Foundations: Open Society Foundations (Soros), Bloomberg Philanthropies, Ford Foundation, Gates Foundation, MacArthur, Mellon, Knight, Hewlett, Skoll, Atlantic Philanthropies, Goldman Sachs Foundation, Google.org, Nike Foundation, Eli & Edythe Broad Foundation, Oprah Winfrey Foundation
  • Tech mega donors: Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn), Eric Schmidt, Marc Benioff, Sean Parker, Brian Chesky (Airbnb): USD 125M in 2022 — largest single donor, Jeff Bezos: USD 100M
  • Finance/Hedge: Kenneth Griffin (Citadel), Jim & Marilyn Simons (Renaissance Technologies), Penny Pritzker (Hyatt), John Doerr (Kleiner Perkins, Board)
  • Corporate: Microsoft, Bank of America, Boeing, Comcast NBCUniversal, Capital One, AT&T, FedEx, PepsiCo, United Airlines, Allstate

The foundation publishes only tier ranges, not exact amounts — criticized by Chicago Sun-Times (Lynn Sweet) as deliberate obfuscation.

Anyone in the German climate discourse wishing to ask the obvious question at this point — which of these US donor constellations positions which German climate activists for what? — gets nowhere with the available tier ranges. That is the point.

The German FFF Carrier Structure — One-Stage
#

Those donating to Fridays for Future Germany donate to “Alle fürs Klima e.V.” — founded June 2021.12 The association only manages money for demo materials and infrastructure, not for salaries. Members are “private solidarity supporters” who are not allowed to be active in the movement themselves — explicitly constructed to prevent influence on internal decisions. On paper. The association is not recognized as charitable, meaning it cannot issue tax-deductible donation receipts.

Comparison: the Letzte Generation carrier structure (Wandelbündnis e.V. → KUEÖ gGmbH → elinor trust, see Structural Analysis Part 6) is three-stage with a charitable anchor. The FFF construction is one-stage without a charitable anchor. Both have the same functional effect: organizational separation between activism brand and financial apparatus, personal accountability blurred, foreign funding flows without public duty of retrospective usage disclosure.

Neubauer herself states that she draws no salary from FFF and earns her income from speaker and panel honoraria, book contracts, journalistic contributions and podcast projects.13 That is plausible. It does not clarify who bears the four Antarctic weeks, the travel costs, the media co-product and the Earth Day amplification reach financially.

Earth Day Synchronization
#

A 40-second video, posted on April 22, 2026 by a former US president, with a German foundation-funded education leg as stage and a Foundation alumna as narrator: this is not a spontaneous Earth Day gesture.

It is a synchronized distribution event.

It falls on the day on which the German federal government enacts a security-policy turn (Pistorius military strategy), reactivates a constitutional-rights precedent (third data retention bill), adopts the largest sanctions package since the start of the war in the EU Council, and plays a threat image into the public sphere (Klöckner headline). Four security- and surveillance-policy decisions — and one Earth Day hope video from Antarctica, posted by the transatlantic progressive patron as rhetorical accompaniment.

German reporting picks up the hope video without contextualizing the day. Berliner Zeitung (“activist ivory tower” — the only sharp left-leaning critique), taz (critical of “slightly overdone positivity” rather than crisis clarity), the mainstream outlets affirmative, Junge Freiheit / Apollo News / Tichys Einblick with the expected class-hypocrisy critique. Nobody draws the line between Earth Day video and the cabinet’s data-retention decision of the same day.

Precedent: Greta 2019, Same Boat Family
#

There is a documented precedent in which the same ensemble (skipper, boat family, staging logic) has already demonstrated how this format operates:

Atlantic sailing voyage Greta Thunberg 2019, IMOCA Malizia II, skipper Boris Herrmann (with Pierre Casiraghi / Yacht Club de Monaco). Greta sails across the Atlantic “not to fly” — but the crew has to be flown back, which retroactively undermined the CO2 calculation. Major media echo at the time, both positive and critical (Tagesspiegel documented the crew-return-flight discussion).14 Afterwards: Obama hosted Greta at his Foundation office in Washington, posed with her for photos, posted her as “one of our planet’s greatest advocates”.15

The ship changed skipper, the format did not. Six years later the pattern repeats itself with Neubauer, a different sailing boat of the same family and a different Earth Day communication from the same US ex-president.

This is not a charge against Boris Herrmann. It is an observation about staging architecture.

The Displacement Dynamic
#

The structural observation is this:

A German federal ministry (BMUV) funds a scientific leg as German-American climate diplomacy. This leg produces the logistics (ship in Antarctica, scientific reputation anchor). A private family foundation (Sick) plus an NGO (Protect the Planet gGmbH) then take over the same ship for a communications leg with celebrity cast. A German foundation alumna of a US program (Obama Foundation Leaders 2020) is the main face of this second leg. A US ex-president posts a 40-second video of it six weeks later on Earth Day — on the day of the largest security and surveillance policy decisions of the young Merz government.

Tax money paid for the scientific run-up. Foundation money paid for the stage. Amplified is foundation soft power. Passed over is the untested alliance of federal politics, family foundation, NGO, professional sailing team, public broadcasters and US foundation that executed this in concert.

This is not “greenwashing”. Greenwashing would be a fossil-fuel company buying a green label. Here a US foundation buys no climate protection — it uses a mission enabled by German tax and foundation money to rebrand a German activist as its alumna in the global Earth Day slot. That is not greenwashing. It is pipeline branding. It works because neither German politics nor the German press address the displacement of definitional power.

Conclusion: Who Wins, Who Loses
#

Winners:

  • Obama Foundation — Earth Day coup. One of their alumnae on a German research vessel in Antarctica, free global reach through German mainstream press, third-party-financed US Foundation sponsorship at zero cost. The donor list grins: Soros, Bloomberg, Ford, Gates, Hewlett, Chesky, Bezos, Griffin, Pritzker.

  • Boris Herrmann / Team Malizia — scientific and political visibility for a professional sailing team with a private-bank / insurance / shipping / big-four sponsor mix. The BMUV-funded scientific mandate upgrades the sponsorship asset; the Earth Day tweet upgrades it further.

  • Sick Environmental Foundation / Protect the Planet gGmbH — first contact with the global Earth Day reach slot of a former US president. Brand elevation for a mid-size family foundation that without this vehicle would barely register internationally.

  • Luisa Neubauer — international reach far beyond the German climate movement, extension of her brand with the US presidential hope stamp.

  • Security and surveillance policy — the Earth Day hope story quietly overlays the same day’s cabinet decisions in coverage.

Losers:

  • German science-policy accountability — a BMUV-funded research run-up becomes the stage for a subsequent foundation-funded PR leg, without the Bundestag, the Science Council or the Environment Committee publicly debating that transition logic.

  • The German climate movement itself — as long as its most prominent face is framed as a US foundation alumna, it is exactly what critics have claimed since 2019: not organizationally autonomous. This framing comes from the patron himself — and it comes not without precedent: the same staging architecture ran with Greta Thunberg on a boat of the same family six years ago.

  • The sovereignty question of German climate policy — when transatlantic definitional power is transferred through personal pipeline loyalties (Schulze 2008/2020, Neubauer 2020, Burkhardt 2022, Detzner 2022, Bösel 2024 — six cohorts, at least nine German alumni identifiable), then German climate, energy and transport policy is incrementally moved out of the sovereignty zone without anyone ever openly proposing it.

One mission. Two legs. Two funders. One ship. One tweet. Forty seconds of video. And the displacement dynamic does its work while everyone repeats the hope word.

We do not repeat it.

Last Generation: How an Aileen Getty pipeline pressured German climate policy

Methodological note. This text is based on primary Bundestag documents (20/6621, 20/6702, WD 4-3000-008/23), the Last Generation 2022 transparency report (cited in the Bundestag WD opinion), the IRS Form 990 data of the Climate Emergency Fund via ProPublica and Instrumentl, and the websites of the organisations named. The text separates two layers that are systematically conflated in public discourse: (1) the scientific-political question of the climate crisis, and (2) the structural question of who, with what money, organised what kind of activism. The first layer is not negotiated here. The second is the subject.

Amadeu Antonio Foundation: Money, Intelligence, History — A Structural Analysis

Methodological note. This text is based on primary Bundestag documents (Drucksachen), the foundation register, the AAS website, and publicly available material on the founder’s Stasi-IM past. Where amounts are only secondary-sourced, this is marked. The foundation does work against right-wing extremism that addresses an unquestionable societal need. The point here is not to deny it its legitimacy — it is to show what the foundation systematically does not show when presenting itself as a “civil society” actor.

Correctiv: Money, Boards, Secrets — A Structural Analysis

Methodological note. This text is based on primary Bundestag documents (Drucksachen), the foundations’ own websites, Correctiv’s governance page, and the program of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) 2023 Science Conference. Where amounts or positions are only secondary-sourced, this is marked. The point is not to deny Correctiv its legitimacy — it is to show what Correctiv systematically does not show when presenting itself as an “independent” investigative platform.
